Inside Line Promotions – KOKOMO, Ind. (July 28, 2016) – Caleb Helms moved forward every time he was on the track last weekend except once during his debut at Kokomo Speedway.
Unfortunately, Helms opened the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions doubleheader on Friday by qualifying 30th quickest, which put him behind for the remainder of the weekend.
“I qualified really bad,” he said. “I was kind of loose and that was my fault. I told them to keep the car that way and when we went out there it was too loose.”
Helms advanced from eighth to sixth place in a heat race to narrowly miss locking into the main event. He then maneuvered from 11th to ninth in the B Main and was forced to use a provisional to start at the back of the A Main.
Helms passed the second-most cars in the main event as passing was at a premium on the bullring. He picked up seven positions to finish 18th.
“Where you lined up in the heat race on Saturday was based off our finish, but it couldn’t go off the provisional,” he said. “We eventually made our way into Saturday’s feature by racing through the B Main. The last two laps I raced cautiously and it almost cost me.”
Helms placed seventh and fifth, respectively, in the twin heat races before he held on for the fourth-and-final transfer position in the B Main. That lined him up 24th for the main event.
“We had a heck of a run going in the feature,” he said. “I was up to 10th with six laps to go when the last yellow came out. I think we could have got another car or two. On the restart the engine started missing and we ran out of fuel. I pulled in with three laps to go. It was going to be a really good run.”
Helms was credited with a 17th-place finish, which ranked fourth for most cars passed.
He will return to All Star action this weekend with races on Friday at Eriez Speedway in Erie, Pa.; Saturday at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway in Imperial, Pa.; and Sunday at Tri-City Raceway Park in Franklin, Pa.
The events at Eriez Speedway and Tri-City Raceway Park will be his debuts.
